Summary:
What if the world holds more dangers—and more wonders—than we have ever known? And what if there is more than one world? From Heather Dixon, author of the acclaimed Entwined, comes a brilliantly conceived adventure that sweeps us from the inner workings of our souls to the far reaches of our imaginations.

Jonathan is perfectly ordinary. But then—as every good adventure begins—the king swoops into port, and Jonathan and his father are enlisted to find the cure to a deadly plague. Jonathan discovers that he's a prodigy at working with a new chemical called fantillium, which creates shared hallucinations—or illusions. And just like that, Jonathan is knocked off his path. Through richly developed parallel worlds, vivid action, a healthy dose of humor, and gorgeous writing, Heather Dixon spins a story that calls to mind The Night Circus and Pixar movies, but is wholly its own.

Review:
I adore Heather and her first novel Entwined, so when I heard she was publishing a new novel I knew I had to get my hands on it. And I've always wanted to read a steampunk, and knew her novel would be my perfect "first". :)

That being said this is my first experience reading a steampunk, so I can't compare it to others, but I truly loved it! What could be better than mixing Victorian England, futuristic mechanics, a little bit of sci-fi that borders fantasy, romance and keeping it all at a level that I can appreciate instead of wanting to rip my head off from the sci-fi complexity? (I really dont' read a lot of sci fi). I can see how people who really hate sci-fi might be turned off, but hey, that's steampunk, so you know what you're getting when you pick up this book...or at least you should.

I also loved Heather's characters. It was so easy to love them, hate them, laugh with them, sympathize with them, cry with them. Each one felt so real. I thought that was great. I think my favorite part about the book was the theme of following your inner compass. The idea that each choice we make leads us down a path, and discovering what that path would be like had we chosen differently, and how that inner feeling is our ultimate guide.
Add to all of this Heather's beautiful writing prose that is both approachable, lyrical and intelligent and you have a really great read.

Heather, I loved it! And that cover! Can't wait to read more from you in the future.

First of all I have to say sorry for being SO MIA lately. Summer is hard, having 2 kids is hard. I'm still reading, but do a lot of my reviewing on goodreads and call it a day. Maybe one of these days I'll do a catch up, what I've been reading post, but for now I HAD to share with you this AWESOME ARC I read!

Summary:
Nine is the ninth female born in her batch of ten females and ten males. By design, her life in Freedom Province is without complications or consequences. However, such freedom comes with a price. The Prime Maker is determined to keep that price a secret from the new batches of citizens that are born, nurtured, and raised androgynously.

But Nine isn't like every other batcher. She harbors indecision and worries about her upcoming Remake Day -- her seventeenth birthday, the age when batchers fly to the Remake facility and have the freedom to choose who and what they'll be.

When Nine discovers the truth about life outside of Freedom Province, including the secret plan of the Prime Maker, she is pulled between two worlds and two lives. Her decisions will test her courage, her heart, and her beliefs. Who can she trust? Who does she love? And most importantly, who will she decide to be?

Review:
Wow! I absolutely adored this book. I was instantly drawn into the character's world and voice. Nine is completely believable and 100% genuine in her thoughts and responses to things.

The world Ilima Todd creates is so beautifully creepy and unique I was just in love with it, but I think the juxtaposition of that and how life could be. It's very powerful. She doesn't shy away from the stickier subjects involved with the society she creates, but in the end it still has a great message. I think it was just a beautiful poignant novel!

What is "freedom" to you? What is "choice"? And what would you choose are all big questions that are presented in this novel. And really in the end it was all about Nine's right to choose who she wanted to be.

I am also so torn about the guys in this book too! Don't worry it's not like a big love triangle. But I love them both. I think she made the right choice, but I hope we get more from the other guy and he finds his happy ending too!

I am emotionally invested in these characters! And that, my friends is a very good thing! And I am assured by the author that book 2 is coming! And I am beyond excited about that.Aubreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01993824625567055858noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5458269007546014175.post-43160577085217092762014-03-05T11:42:00.003-05:002014-03-05T11:42:24.604-05:00LONGING FOR HOME: HOPE SPRINGS by Sarah M Eded Blog Tour Review

Summary:
All is not well in Wyoming. Katie Macauley gave up her life-long dream of returning to Ireland in order to make a home for herself in Hope Springs, but her future has never been so uncertain. The town is more divided than ever, with both the Irish and the Reds stealing property, burning buildings, and endangering lives.
Katie’s heart remains sharply divided between her love for playful Tavish and steady Joseph, a decision she feels ill-prepared to make. In the midst of the growing unrest, temperatures drop quickly, too quickly, and Irish nightmares of famine and cold resurface as the little Wyoming town struggles to beat the harsh winter.

Katie makes one sacrifice after another to keep the peace and help see her loved ones through the difficult days ahead, but will it be enough?

Can the town make amends before their hatred consumes them all? And will Katie find the love she has been searching for as well as a home to call her own?

Review:
So, you may recall that I read and reviewed the first book in this series HERE. And so when I had the opportunity to find out what happens next in Hope Springs I took it!

HOPE SPRINGS picks up right where we left off, but was also kind of confusing to me. I felt like in the first book she had made her romantic choice, and the summary said her heart remains "divided". Huh. Okay.

I felt like much of HOPE SPRINGS was just rehashing plot that was already in the first book. The feud, Katie's determination to end it, Joseph's determination to stay out of it (even though he has the financial power to ruin the town if they can't get along, and in my opinion he should have used that power against the Red Road a long time ago...), the Irish road is poor, and sick, and hurt, and at risk of dying off in the winter because of the cruelty of the Red road (yet Joseph still won't do anything about that). And Katie is back to not knowing which man she loves even though she already "chose" Tavish.

Don't get me wrong. I actually liked this book better. I think the plotlines that pushed the story forward of Katie's relationship with the Johnsons, and Tavish's family's troubles etc. really were more interesting than the goings on in the first book. But in the end I felt like this was a better book and I loved how it turned out. But I feel like both books together could have been combined into one great novel, instead of two longer drawn out stories.

So if you like just a good story, a fluffier read. These two books are certainly for you. But they do deal with some hard things. Especially this one. I cried for a good portion of some of the later chapters. So know it isn't fluff in the way of it just being a happy book. But fluff in the way that it's just an easy read for a weekend or beach trip. They're especially great this month because of the Irish themes. :)
Okay, this review would not be complete if I didn't tell you a little bit about Sara. I've known Sara for 7 years now, and I can tell you this book is the culmination of just as, if not more years of work and love being spread onto the page directly from her heart. I am so excited for her and her debut novel. This book has a special place in my heart, as I know it does for her!

That being said, remember as a reviewer, no matter how I love the author, I have to be honest about the book. Well luckily in this case I don't have to sugar coat things to tell you what I loved about DEFY!

Having read many of her other novels throughout the years I can tell you DEFY is the culmination of all she has learned from those endeavors. Sara's strong point is the romance. She always writes compelling romance with twists and turns in the individual character's story lines that affect the relationship.

Yes, DEFY is a fantasy set in a unique jungle covered country, but it's the emotions and the relationships that are at the heart of this book. The disgusting actions of the King force Alexa and her twin brother's hand when her parents are killed. And Alexa has to live a lie. She has to be strong, and in so many ways she is. But she is also human, and feminine and those emotions have a way of breaking through when she is alone and allows herself to think her teenage girl thoughts. The juxtaposition of her strong exterior and her tender heart made her feel real to me. None of us are tough and strong all the time. And I think teenage readers will appreciate her honesty with herself.

The best part of the book is the pacing. It just never stops. You think Alexa has things figured out only for a wrench to be thrown into the mix. Some of it I saw coming, some of it I didn't.

Do yourself a favor and save those giftcards for a week after Christmas and go pick up DEFY! If you enjoy fantasy and romance, this is a book for you!

Oh and I'm totally team Damian. You'll have to tell me what team you're on when you read it!Aubreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01993824625567055858noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5458269007546014175.post-66928158764091673412013-12-02T11:39:00.000-05:002013-12-02T11:39:37.461-05:00Catching Fire, Ender's Game and Frozen ReviewsWell hi! Okay, so this is a late post. Most of you I'm sure have already seen this movie. But I am going to write my review in the hopes that you will go see it if you haven't yet!

From including things from the book that I thought were missing in the first movie, to smoother, non-motion-sick inducing cinematography.

I was lucky enough to go see an early showing the Thursday before Thanksgiving, and it was so much fun. I felt like I was holding my breath fro the full 2 1/2 hours, even though I've read the book! Seeing it on the screen was a whole new experience. And definitely worth seeing.
There was so much I enjoyed about it. And it definitely is something that our club had a lot to talk about.

If you're a fan of the book I don't think the movie will disappoint you. It was done well, the acting was all excellent. You really feel for Ender and root for him in all of his endeavors. I think if you haven't read the book there is probably some things missing that fill in the book and the secondary character developments that really help you understand those social interactions and how they affect Ender. But otherwise it was a good adaptation.
I may have cried like 4 times. And the music was very broadway-esque to move along the story telling, but to be extremely emotional as well.

It was beautiful and fun. My daughters both loved it as well. I might just have to add some Frozen dress ups to our Christmas gifts this year. Whether you are a kid at heart, or taking your kids, Frozen is definitely worth seeing in the theaters!
Aubreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01993824625567055858noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5458269007546014175.post-36832871911821279692013-10-25T19:22:00.000-04:002013-10-25T19:22:02.930-04:00Giveaway Winner: ALL THE TRUTH THAT'S IN ME by Julie BerrySorry for the late posting about this guys! Are you easily distracted while listening to your English teacher? Do you find yourself completely uninterested in geography? Well, it may not be your fault. The janitors at Welcher Elementary know a secret, and it s draining all the smarts out of the kids. Twelveyear- old Spencer Zumbro, with the help of his classmate Daisy Gullible Gates, must fight with and against a secret, janitorial society that wields wizard-like powers. Who can Spencer and Daisy trust and how will they protect their school and possibly the world? Janitors is book 1 in a new children s fantasy series by debut novelist Tyler Whitesides. You ll never look at a mop the same way again.

So here's what's hard for me about this book. It's clearly middle grade. Which is fine and great, but middle grade isn't always my thing. My issue with middle grade is usually the simplicity of the narrative. It takes something really unique to get me interested in a MG. However, when I heard about this series it's one I wanted to pick up.

So when I was offered a review copy of book #3 and expressed that I hadn't read them at all yet, but was interested Shadow Mountain was kind enough to send me all 3! Wow! So here I am reading them for ya!

The best part about JANITORS was it's pure unique-ness. The theory of magic, and what is plaguing the schools and what a Janitor's job is (as compared to a custodian) was really intriguing.

I think this is a book middle grade readers will love. The characters are fun too and each wholly unique with their own set of quirks, which I loved as well. I've only heard each book gets better, so as I read on I will let you know how I feel about that. But for now, I'd say if you like MG or have a child reading MG this is certainly a good one to pick up!

Plus, the cover art is really cool.

I met Julie years ago when I was pretty new to blogging and reviewed her fabulous debut novel THE AMARANTH ENCHANTMENT. She is a lovely person and has been a dear friend ever since!

I was lucky enough to go out to dinner with her and another author friend of mine, Sara B Larson when she arrived in SLC on Friday night.

Julie told us that this was the third book she'd ever written, as part of her Masters Degree program at Vermont College. After it had been rejected by a publisher she thought it would never be published again. Years later they pitched it to 10 publishers and got 6 bids! That's incredible! It truly is an amazing book!

Julie talked about how when she was in Jr. High she had a stalker crush on a 9th grade boy. She knew his schedule and it just made her day to see him in the halls. Even though he probably had no clue who she was. Didn't we all have crushes like that? This sort of puppy love behavior had a big impact on ALL THE TRUTH THAT'S IN ME. Summary:
Four years ago, Judith and her best friend disappeared from their small town of Roswell Station. Two years ago, only Judith returned, permanently mutilated, reviled and ignored by those who were once her friends and family. Unable to speak, Judith lives like a ghost in her own home, silently pouring out her thoughts to the boy who’s owned her heart as long as she can remember—even if he doesn’t know it—her childhood friend, Lucas. But when Roswell Station is attacked, long-buried secrets come to light, and Judith is forced to choose: continue to live in silence, or recover her voice, even if it means changing her world, and the lives around her, forever. This startlingly original novel will shock and disturb you; it will fill you with Judith’s passion and longing; and its mysteries will keep you feverishly turning the pages until the very last.
Review:

Oh my goodness! This book was absolutely fascinating and beautiful. I simply could not put it down. The writing was lyrical, the voice so strong and unique. I love Judith and her strong will. She'd have to have one to be so amazing after all she's been through.

This book takes you through a journey of discovery to find out just what did happen to Judith. You know very little information at the beginning and literally are kept guessing of the entire truth until the end. Judith holds it all inside of her because of her fear that the truth she holds may destroy the people she loves, and because she just doesn't really know how to tell it. Keeping it from both reader and community, we follow her through her journey of self discovery, finding love, and making peace with her community that has shunned her.

This book deserves awards and praise far above what I can give. Pick this one up, you will NOT be sorry!
First off, here's some info about the book!

Summary:
Nina Rushforth was born with a silver spoon caught in her throat. She and her father have mapped out a future that includes a brilliant legal career, a marriage to an equally stellar attorney or Wall Street whiz kid, and eventually the production of three perfect children. A semester at St. Andrew's University in Scotland, was part of the plan, but falling in love with a handsome missionary was not.

Six months later, after Elliot returns from his mission and after a tumultuous courtship, Nina finds herself teaching at a junior high school, learning to keep house in a minuscule apartment, and living with a man who doesn't know any more about being married than she does. Intimacy, cooking, laundry, lesson plans, and a tug-of-war with a possessive mother-in-law prove to be more overwhelming than Nina can successfully manage. The newlyweds awaken to realize the head on the adjacent pillow belongs to a stranger.

This novel captures the heartbreak of young love caught in the turbulent social crosscurrents of the 70's, at a time when brave women struggled to find dignity and equality in the workplace, as well as peace at home.
Which is awesome! Cause I have so much to bring to you in the next while! So, as part of that I am going to give away another book, yet to be determined what book, to a second place winner from the giveaway! So go check that out!

2) How do you feel about not finishing a book? If the beginning is slow, or the story just isn't grabbing you, how long do you give a book before you put it down for good? Have there been books that you've read that took a while to get into?

I felt that way about Stephenie Meyer's THE HOST. I mean until page like 120 it was SLOW. But once I got there past that internal information going on inside Mealine and Wanda's newly combined head, the action of the story started and I was really into it.

So now I hesitate to not keep going. In hopes that it will get good in the end.

What do you think?

3) So not book related, but who is so excited that Fall is pretty much here! I sure am! Halloween is one of my favorite holidays in the universe. I am SO excited!

Happy reading this weekend you guys!Aubreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01993824625567055858noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5458269007546014175.post-40770048050509201772013-09-11T11:44:00.002-04:002013-09-17T12:38:52.288-04:00Book Tour and Author Signing Event for BLACKMOORE by Julianne Donaldson (Plus a Giveaway!!!!!!)

Summary:

Kate Worthington knows she can never have her heart’s desire and so
believes she will never marry. But Kate’s meddlesome mother has other
plans. Kate journeys to the stately manor of Blackmoore on the cliffs above the seashore, where
she must face the truth and the man that has kept her heart captive.

Set in northern England, Blackmoore is
a Regency romance that tells the story of a young woman struggling to
learn to follow her heart. With hints of Jane Austen and the Bronte
sisters, Blackmoore
is a page-turning tale of romance, intrigue and devotion.

Review:

Oh how I love Julieanne's books!

In this novel we find a young lady not so naiive in her world of social classes and how one can be ruined by unsatisfactory behavior from family members. Kate has grown up in a not so happy home, and finds herself drawing closer and closer to her childhood friends, the Delafields.

However something changes in all of their relationships. Sylvia's friendship turns cold, and Henry... well what can be said about Henry but SWOON! But both Kate and Henry's mothers have plans of their own. And Kate soon learns how far she is willing to go to set herself free of it all.

Blackmoore will not disappoint fans of all things regency and romance.

2) Push Broom

3) Truth

Make of those what you will. See you next week for some super exciting stuff!Aubreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01993824625567055858noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5458269007546014175.post-30146557895488118922013-08-22T12:44:00.002-04:002013-08-22T12:44:38.994-04:00Thursday Three1) In a very non-book related activity, we've been playing a lot of our new Disney Infinity game over at our house. My two girls are sick so my Kindergartener is home giving us lots of opportunity for play! It's a super fun game and we are loving it!

Easy enough for my 5 year old to play (mostly, sometimes she needs help, but she's not a big gamer and has never really played a game like this before -- so if your child is good on other games this would be perfect!) but so entertaining enough that my hubs and I have stayed up till past midnight the last few nights playing. We had a good long laugh when we kept falling short on a challenge mini-game and at the end of one Jack Sparrow announced "Well that was horrible" just before the "Nice Disney narrator guy" said "Good try!".

Plus, here's another little plug. My husband helped code the game. His company had a contract job with Avalanche (the main creators). So go check it out! And a hint -- buy the figurines NOW if you're gonna save the packs for Christmas or something. They are on sale at walmart (but they don't advertise it in the store! They're just cheaper at checkout!) Just an FYI.

For more on the game go to: https://infinity.disney.com/

2) DOWNTON NEWS!!!! I love this show! And although I wasn't super in love with season 3...I am still very much looking forward to season 4. Masterpiece has released the three new male cast members, and a bit of who their characters are. Check that out here:

3) And lastly, do you remember that AMAZING movie I went to go see with my friends at Sundance? AUSTENLAND? Adapted from Shannon Hale's novel? Well it's out in theaters and being released all around the country and I am SO excited to see it again! Here's the link so you can find it in your neck of the woods!

http://www.sonyclassics.com/austenland/dates.htmlAubreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01993824625567055858noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5458269007546014175.post-19103954140119889672013-08-15T07:30:00.000-04:002013-08-15T07:30:00.999-04:00Thursday Three1) Do you read books in verse? I have read only a few and most of them I have loved. The addition of verse to tell a story is like a living breathing element. The words seem to mean more. Their arrangement on the page a visual aid to the story.

Some of my favorites are: SONG OF THE SPARROW by Lisa Ann Sandell, GLIMPSE by Carol Lynch Williams, and our book club's pick this month INSIDE OUT AND BACK AGAIN by Thanhha Lai has been magical so far. There's a reason it was a National Book Award winner!

2) I have been thinking about Harry Potter a lot lately. I think I need to crack them open and give them a read again. I think I want to start reading them with my daughter. They are magical wonderful novels and I just adore them. I wish she'd write something else for the children's world, or even like a Harry Potter the 2nd generation books!

3) I absolutely LOVE book orders from schools. It was something I loved participating in when I was in school, when I was getting my teaching degree, and when I was subbing. Now my daughter is in school and I get her first book order and...

it was very underwhelming.

A list full of books that we already own or that she would have no interest in. There's 2 books on the list I think I'll get. But when I saw that flier I was hoping for more. There was a time that book orders were a place for me to find NEW authors, NEW books. Not just where to order the set of books of the movie that's coming out. I sure hope they get better.
