Finishing Books

Hey all,

I know I have been doing just a lot of editorial type posts lately, but I have had a lot on my mind, and not much reading under my belt...

So....today I am thinking about finishing books. I wonder, do you always finish a book when you pick it up? Or do you put them down?

I think the reason why not so much reading has been getting done (besides my crazy busy life right now, I mean really who doesn't have an insane life for the holidays?) is that I started a book, was liking it, but didn't have time to finish it, so I had to take it back to the library before I could finish.

Now I don't really want to get the same book again, but I can't seem to get myself to move on and get into something else either (even though I have a TON of books on my shelf that I have been waiting for!).

I am usually a start it and finish it type person. Usually if I stick with a book even if I find the beginning slow or uninteresting, or even just not to my liking there is at least SOMETHING I can find about the book that I like in the end, that makes me happy that I read it.

How about you? Do you finish every book you start? If you don't finish a book does it bug you? Cause that is where I am at right now.

I used to be obsessed with finishing a book, but the quote of Henry David Thoreau kept nagging at me.
He said, "Read the best books first, or you may not have a chance to read them at all."
Soooo...I still give every book my best shot, but if it slows down and begins to severely bore me, I move on to one of "my best books," something that I will appreciate.

I used to make myself finish them, but I don't anymore. I figure that I have a lot of things to do and if it isn't something I can learn from or enjoy, then my time is better spent doing something else, like finishing MY book!

I finish them. There have only been 2 books that I have read and then put down and started again years later. But I guess I have never had the misfortune of reading a book that I absolutely didn't like. :)

Yeah! I know how you feel. I have a couple of books on the go at once. One in the car, one in my handbag, one on my bedstand. All great but none finished. Time is the enemy. I guess I should focus on just one, but then you forget it and have nothing to read when you need it! Aghhh and buy another and so the cycle continues.

So, I finish a book only if I want to...as in it's a "i can't put it down" type of read. I can usually find good reasons to finish books. However, if the book hasn't grabbed me after the first few chapters...I have a hard time keeping it on the "must read" priority list. And if I run out of time, I skim to the middle, then read the last few chapters or so. I don't think there is anything wrong with not finishing a book that wasn't a "to die for" must read.
